Some things never change. Pen & ink, 26x17cm, 2017.

This cartoon was produced to accompany an article written by Fiona Grahame (of The Orkney News) for iScot magazine. I am very grateful to them for using it.

As Fiona’s article explains, Norse invaders supplanted the indigenous Orcadian Picts. My cartoon shows a Viking confused by Pictish symbolism and political beliefs. He speaks the runic script of Elder Futhark. To my (very limited) knowledge, the meaning of the Pictish symbol stones remains a mystery.

iScot magazine is a high quality production and thoroughly deserving of support by those who agree that Scotland badly needs its own independent media. It can be subscribed to in print or digital form by visiting the website at iscot.scot.
