Obsidian Butterfly

Obsidian Butterfly is a collage created for the 2024 Encyclopaedia of Great British Collage exhibition at Northlight gallery. It is constructed from antique royal souvenir memorabilia and encyclopaedia pages. Queen Mary, wife of King George V, is transformed into Ītzpāpālōtl, the Obsidian Butterfly – a mysterious Aztec goddess associated with bats, moths, butterflies, and infant mortality (amongst other things).

Obsidian Butterfly is a partner piece to The Lord of Fire, another collage featuring George V as the Aztec fire god Xiuhtecuhtli.

A video retrospective exhibition featuring this collage can be viewed on YouTube: No Kings! A Post-Colonial Scottish collage exhibition.

The original collage is also for sale. Get in touch for more information.
