HMS Pheasant 1917
HMS Pheasant 1917 is a mixed-media artwork using chalk and charcoal over a watercolour base. The original drawing from 2019 was created for an article in iScot magazine by Orkney News editor Fiona Grahame following her initial research into the untold story of the ship and its crew. HMS Pheasant was a Royal Navy M-class destroyer which struck a mine and was lost off the coast of Hoy, Orkney, during World War One.
Fiona continued her research and has now written a book on the subject, HMS Pheasant: Who were the lost men and boys?, available from all good book shops from the 21st of January 2025. The book is a remembrance of the crew, telling what Fiona has been able to discover about of their life stories and providing an insight into British society at the time. As a natural harbour in a strategically important location, Scapa Flow was used as a major British naval base during both world wars, and a great many people were stationed in the Orkney.
This picture is included in the book along with other photos by both Martin Laird and Fiona Grahame, and many historical pictures courtesy of Orkney Library & Archive and kindly provided by the families of the deceased.
The original artwork (which is quite large at 730x540mm) is also for sale – enquiries welcome.
